Azul Brazilian Airlines has expanded its codeshare partnership with JetBlue, adding eight new destinations to its connecting network in the United States and Puerto Rico.
The expansion gives Azul passengers arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) access to additional JetBlue-operated flights under the partnership. The eight new destinations are Baltimore, Charlotte, Columbus, Indianapolis, Detroit, Houston and Chicago, as well as Ponce, Puerto Rico.
The move strengthens Fort Lauderdale’s role as one of Azul’s principal gateways between Brazil and the United States.
More Connections Through Fort Lauderdale
Azul currently operates 62 monthly flights in both directions between its Viracopos hub in Campinas and Fort Lauderdale, offering more than 15,600 seats per month on the route.
The latest codeshare expansion coincides with JetBlue’s growing network at Fort Lauderdale. Passengers arriving from Brazil can now combine Azul and JetBlue flights within the same itinerary, significantly increasing the number of U.S. markets accessible through the Florida gateway.
For travelers originating in Brazil, this can make Fort Lauderdale an increasingly attractive alternative to Miami when traveling beyond South Florida.
Azul President Abhi Shah said the addition of new destinations expands customers’ travel options while strengthening connectivity between Brazil and important markets served by JetBlue.
JetBlue’s vice president of network planning and partnerships, Dave Jehn, also highlighted the additional connecting opportunities created for passengers arriving in Fort Lauderdale.
A Stronger Brazil-U.S. Network
Codeshare partnerships can be particularly valuable for airlines such as Azul, whose extensive Brazilian domestic network feeds passengers into a relatively limited number of international gateways.
Azul’s hub at Viracopos International Airport (VCP) connects dozens of Brazilian cities to its international services. By pairing that network with JetBlue’s U.S. connectivity from Fort Lauderdale, the two airlines can offer itineraries reaching markets that Azul would be unlikely to serve nonstop itself.
The addition of destinations including Chicago, Houston and Detroit is particularly significant because it extends Azul’s reach beyond the traditional Florida and East Coast markets frequently used by Brazil-bound travelers.
It also illustrates a broader trend in international aviation: rather than opening costly long-haul routes to every potential destination, airlines are increasingly using partnerships to expand the effective size of their networks.
For Azul, Fort Lauderdale is becoming much more than a destination in Florida. It is increasingly functioning as a connecting gateway between Azul’s Brazilian network and JetBlue’s growing U.S. network.
With eight additional destinations now included in the partnership, travelers between Brazil and the United States will have another set of options for building multi-city and connecting itineraries through South Florida.
