The Brazilian government announced today that will privatize both Galeao in Rio de Janeiro, and Confins in Belo Horizonte, and invest U$3.5 billion on regional airports. According to Wagner Bittencourt (civil aviation secretary), the amount will be invested in 270 regional airports, being 67 on the north region.
For the two main airports (Galeao and Confins) the investment will be U$5 billion, with the auction being held in September, 2013. To qualify, operators must have previous experience with airports with 35 million passengers.
The government also announced that it will bring in an experienced international partner to provide know how, and improve the service quality on the airports, and that the goal is to have 96% of the Brazilian population at 100 km or less from an airport that is ready to receive regular services.
