GOL Takes Over Avianca’s Commercial Representation in Brazil

GOL Linhas Aéreas will assume responsibility for Avianca’s commercial representation in Brazil, marking another step toward closer integration between the two airlines under the Abra Group.

Under the new arrangement, GOL’s commercial team will manage Avianca’s flights, connections and products for Brazil’s business-to-business market. This includes relationships with travel agencies, consolidators, corporate clients and other industry partners.

The change does not affect flight operations. Avianca will continue operating its own aircraft and services, while GOL will serve as its commercial representative in the Brazilian market.

According to the airlines, their sales teams completed a joint training program designed to ensure a smooth transition and maintain service standards for commercial partners.

A Reciprocal Arrangement

The strategy follows a model already used elsewhere in the Americas. Since 2023, Avianca has represented GOL commercially in Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Central America and North America.

GOL will now perform a similar role for Avianca in Brazil, taking advantage of its extensive relationships with the country’s travel industry.

“Assuming Avianca’s commercial representation in Brazil reflects the Abra Group’s confidence in the maturity of our team and in the strong relationships we have built with the travel trade over the years,” said Danillo Barbizan, GOL’s sales director.

Connecting Brazil Through Bogotá

Avianca currently operates 56 weekly flights from Brazil, connecting São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Manaus and Belém with its Bogotá hub. From the Colombian capital, passengers can continue to more than 80 destinations in the Americas and Europe.

This network complements GOL’s extensive domestic presence and could help Abra offer Brazilian agencies and corporate clients a more coordinated portfolio of domestic and international travel options.

In practical terms, the immediate change is primarily commercial rather than operational. Travelers should not expect GOL to operate Avianca flights or the two airlines to become a single carrier. Both brands will continue to maintain their own aircraft, operations and customer-facing identities.

However, closer coordination behind the scenes could eventually make it easier for travel agencies to sell combined itineraries and offer connections between GOL’s Brazilian network and Avianca’s international routes.

Abra Advances Its Regional Strategy

Created in 2022, the Abra Group brought GOL and Avianca under the same holding company while keeping the airlines operationally independent. The group has since sought opportunities to share expertise, improve distribution and create efficiencies across its network.

Giving each airline commercial responsibility in the markets where it has the strongest local presence is a relatively straightforward way to generate those synergies without merging their operations.

For the Brazilian travel market, GOL’s representation of Avianca could provide agencies with a more direct local sales structure while giving Avianca greater access to GOL’s established distribution relationships.

The move demonstrates how Abra is gradually integrating the commercial strengths of its airlines—and building a more coordinated aviation network across Latin America.
