Delta Airlines just announced more details of its plan to become Latin America’s major North American carrier, after it announced last September a major investment of $2 Billion Dollars in Latam Airlines, in  move that shocked the industry, and specially American Airlines.

The announcement states that as of Feb 1st, 2020, Delta and LATAM will start codesharing on a number of flights throughout Latin America covering 51 destinations, and in North America covering about 74 destinations.

At the same time, LATAM will cease its longstanding partnership with American Airlines, which is already preparing for a marketshare battle with the new alliance by starting new frequencies, and certainly an aggressive fare war, which could benefit consumers.

Steve Sear, Delta President of International commented on the important milestone:

“This is an important milestone for customers as we begin to deliver on the transformative partnership between Delta and LATAM announced earlier this year. Once fully realized, this partnership will give us the ability to offer our shared customers an industry-leading network and superior service across the Americas.”
