GOL Linhas Aéreas is preparing to significantly expand its presence in Europe, with plans to increase its new Rio de Janeiro-Lisbon route to daily service while exploring additional destinations across the continent. The move marks a major milestone for the Brazilian carrier as it enters the long-haul international market for the first time.

The airline is scheduled to launch nonstop flights between Rio de Janeiro Galeão and Lisbon on September 16, 2026, initially operating four weekly frequencies. The route will become GOL’s first-ever European destination and a key component of its broader international growth strategy.

According to GOL executives, international expansion has become one of the airline’s main strategic pillars following its recovery and integration into the Abra Group, which also includes Avianca and Wamos Air. The group provides GOL with valuable expertise in long-haul operations and Airbus A330 aircraft, accelerating the carrier’s entry into intercontinental markets.

Beyond Lisbon, GOL has already confirmed Paris as its second European destination and is evaluating opportunities in other key markets, including Spain and Italy. The airline also plans to launch flights from Rio de Janeiro to New York and Orlando, further strengthening Galeão Airport’s role as an international gateway.

To support its long-haul ambitions, GOL expects to operate five Airbus A330neo aircraft between 2026 and 2027. These widebody jets will provide the range and capacity needed for transatlantic and North American services while offering passengers a new premium travel experience on board.

The expansion comes as demand for international travel from Brazil continues to strengthen. In 2025, GOL increased its overall capacity by 13.8%, while international capacity surged by 38.5%. During the first quarter of 2026, the airline fully restored its fleet capacity and achieved an average load factor of 83%, providing a solid foundation for further international growth.

If successful, GOL’s European expansion could reshape the competitive landscape on Brazil-Europe routes, offering travelers more nonstop options while transforming the airline from a predominantly domestic carrier into a global player.
