The Brazilian aviation industry could be on the verge of one of its most significant fleet changes in decades. The Abra Group, parent company of GOL and Avianca, has announced an agreement with Embraer for up to 45 E195-E2 aircraft, including 20 firm orders, 10 purchase options, and 15 additional purchase rights. Deliveries are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027.
For GOL, the move represents a major departure from its long-standing strategy of operating an all-Boeing 737 fleet. While the airline has built its low-cost model around fleet commonality, the addition of Embraer E2 aircraft would provide greater flexibility on routes where the capacity of a Boeing 737 may be larger than demand.
Better fit for regional markets
The Embraer E195-E2 seats up to 146 passengers, making it well suited for thinner domestic and regional routes. Its lower fuel consumption and operating costs compared with previous-generation aircraft also make it an attractive option as airlines continue to focus on efficiency and sustainability.
For the Abra Group, the aircraft could be deployed across multiple airlines in its portfolio, including GOL and Avianca, allowing the group to optimize capacity while expanding into new markets.
A boost for Brazilian aerospace
The agreement is another important milestone for Embraer, whose E2 family continues to gain traction worldwide. It also highlights the growing confidence in Brazilian aerospace technology, especially at a time when airlines are seeking aircraft that can profitably serve medium-density routes.
If GOL ultimately becomes an E2 operator, all three of Brazil’s largest airlines, GOL, LATAM, and Azul, will have Embraer aircraft playing an increasingly important role in their fleets, strengthening the manufacturer’s position in its home market.
