German Efromovich, head of Brazil’s Synergy group, which was the sole bidder for Portuguese state owned carrier TAP is seeking Polish citizenship to comply with rules capping foreign ownership of European Union airlines at 49 percent.

Efromovich, whose parents were from Poland, said at a press conference in Lisbon “I have the right to be Polish.”

Synergy, faces a deadline of Dec for a final bid for the carrier, informed the Portuguese Finance Ministry yesterday in the country’s official government gazette.

Efromovich holds a Brazilian and Colombian citizenship, and Synergy would make a final offer via its Luxembourg- based Synergy Europa unit. They could also partner with other European companies such as the Portuguese airline Euro Atlantic Airways.
