LATAM Completes Retrofit of First Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

LATAM Airlines has reached an important milestone in its fleet renewal strategy: the airline has completed
the cabin retrofit of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The widebody is the first of a series of
Dreamliners that will receive a completely refreshed interior, bringing a more modern and comfortable
experience to passengers on long-haul routes between South America and destinations in North America and Europe.

A Multi-Year Dreamliner Modernization Program

The refurbishment of this first 787-9 is part of a broader project that started in 2021 and
includes the modernization of 24 Boeing 787 aircraft (both 787-8 and 787-9) by 2025. According to LATAM,
several 787-8s have already been upgraded, with work being carried out at maintenance bases in Brazil and Chile.

The retrofit is a complex engineering effort. Each aircraft involves up to 150 specialized professionals
working in multidisciplinary teams and more than 70 suppliers providing components and systems. In total,
around 2,500 new parts are installed on every airplane, and the process typically takes between six and nine
weeks from the moment the aircraft enters the hangar to its return to commercial service.

What Changes On Board?

cabin in both premium and economy classes. Passengers can expect updated seats and finishes, redesigned
lighting and cabin décor, and improvements aimed at enhancing accessibility and overall comfort during
long flights.

The Boeing 787 family is already known for features such as larger windows, quieter cabins and better
pressurization compared to previous-generation aircraft. With the new retrofit program, LATAM builds on
these advantages by offering a more consistent onboard product across its long-haul fleet.

First Routes and Impact for Travelers

LATAM’s first retrofitted 787-9 has already entered commercial service, debuting on the busy route between
Santiago (SCL) and Miami (MIA). Over time, more international routes should gradually receive aircraft with
the new configuration, benefiting travelers flying between South America and key markets in the United States
and Europe.

For passengers, the main impact is a more pleasant experience on overnight and long-haul journeys:
a newer cabin, improved comfort and a look that matches LATAM’s latest brand standards. For frequent flyers,
the expanded presence of refurbished Dreamliners in the network is also good news, as it increases the chances
of enjoying the updated product on more routes.
