The GRU Airport (Sao Paulo – Guarulhos) announced the installation of thermal cameras to help identify passengers with elevated temperatures (above 37.8C). The cameras operate using AI (Artificial Intelligence) and analyze the algorithms that measure the temperature proportional to the quantity of infrared rays coming out from a person’s body. It is possible to take the temperature of five thousand passengers in 30 minutes with great precision.
Airports in Spain, Turkey, Chile, Argentina and Colombia are using the same equipment as well as the Salvador Metro rail, since June 1.
The cameras work non stop and are installed at the boarding gate on Terminal 2, that concentrates 90% of flights and passengers traffic. At Terminal 3, passengers’ temperature is checked by paramedics at the boarding gate.
